September Stragglers

This is IT! I've done it! I've finished the September photo postings and October's not even over yet! (don't say it, I know it's cutting it super close, but I have been victorious!!!!) I present to you the "September stragglers:" Photos that I wanted to post but have no particular theme. Enjoy!

A sweet face greeting me after a nap.

Sitting still (and oh-so-serious) for his portrait.

This is Moses' "Old Soul" look.

Couldn't decide if I like this one...

...or this one better.

On to OCTOBER!

Skivvies

Before Moses was born I was hoping to use cloth diapers on him and looked into diaper services in Vancouver. It was then that I learned that cloth diapers have come a long way since the pre-folds and pins my Mom used on my brother and me! There are all sorts of options when it comes to cloth. One company (New and Green Baby Company) even offered a chance to "test drive" about 12 different types/brands of cloth diapers for two weeks. I was sold! I got the tester kit in late August and am now the proud owner of a growing arsenal of "pocket diapers", "all-in-ones" and even a couple of wool diaper covers for overnight.

There was a bit of a learning curve when it came to learning about the natural fibres and different properties of each diaper but once I got the hang of it I really enjoyed it! Technically, I could have found "the" one type of diaper I liked the most and then bought a whole bunch of them. But, ladies, it's like shoes: why have just one pair? You know, you need the heels, the flats, the tennis shoes--something for each occasion. With these cloth diapers it's like that: you want something that works best for overnight, something for naps, something that's trim fitting for under jeans, something that dries in a flash, something that's super easy for outings and for babysitters...you get the picture.

Here Moses demonstrates that the velcro closure isn't maybe the best option for just sitting around in one's skivvies...but it sure is easy for Mom now that changing Moses' diaper is like trying to change a greased pig. Man, the kid is wiggly! Many of the other diapers have snaps to keep them closed.

The other thing that's great about some kinds of cloth diapers these days is that they will often last through more than one child. I tried to choose colours that I thought would work on both boy and girl Rioslings. This is one case where it's okay (and even cute) to let your underwear show!

Moses lounges in a pre-fold with a polka-dotted diaper cover to keep everything around him dry. I like to use the pre-folds in the morning when we work on going to the potty. But that's a conversation for another post... :)

Things We Like to Eat

Like his Dad I think Moses is going to be a bit of a gourmet. How can I tell? His tastes vary widely and he isn't afraid of the exotic.

Such as frog legs.

The odd toe or two.

Or the strings from a hoodie. Mmmmmm we like those strings.

Okay, seriously, though.

Like many first-time-uptight moms, it's nothing but homemade and organic. It sounds hoity toity but it's really not--I just boil a few fruits, vegetables and grains and stockpile their purees in the freezer. Shoot, I wish cooking for myself were that easy. The best part for me has been trying grains I haven't tried before like millet (above), quinoa and kamut.

We started with brown rice.

And once we could handle rice,

we moved onto barley, sweet barley. And from Jeremy's previous post on Kermit and peas you know how well that seemed to go over. :)

Moses favourite part is dessert. Dessert is sucking voraciously on the wet washcloth we use to wash off the mess. I know, it's weird, but he fights for that washcloth grinning the whole time, much like a puppy to a shoe.

Grandad Pays a Visit

Mid September my Dad made the Rios household the northnernmost stop on his epic roadtrip from Dallas to Vancouver and back. This visit was a bit different from others, less "hey let's celebrate and play 'cause Dad's here" and more "oh yeah, life is different post-baby." Lots of naps (for Moses), diaper changes (also for Moses), trips to the store to buy baby food ingredients and (bless him) Dad driving Moses and me around for no reason other than to get the kid to sleep.

Dad also had the opportunity to speak twice about Juice Plus while he was here and he did a great job! Dad and Moses (his poster boy) are pictured at the Oakridge Public Library at his "gig."

Moses and Dad watched the Dallas Cowboys play courtesy of Dad's super-techy slingbox.

Moses' Grandpa Bruce is a Packers fan and believes exposing Moses to Cowboys games might be a form of child abuse.

This doesn't look abusive, does it? :) Grandpa Bruce, to us Texans, this is called 'culture'.

And besides, I don't know how much of the game either of them caught. ;)
Thanks for the visit, Dad! Please come again!

Sleeping Beauty

Why are babies so darn cute and sweet when they are sleeping? (perhaps because it's a miracle when they do? :))

Maybe it's their sweet little lips?

Or their resting eyelashes and jowly cheeks?

Or the way that they grab onto their carseats like they are the kings of it all?

Baking Lesson

Annalese and I tried our hand at making homemade bagels a few weeks ago. Although our final batch was a success we felt a little like Lucy and Ethel...a word to the wise: If a recipe calls for vital wheat gluten, know that it is an additive to the flour and not something to be used full strength. Unless of course you want your baked bagels to look something like this:

The Late Show

Some nights sleep doesn't come easy and there's just no point in pushing it. On one such night I decided to give the 'try to go to sleep' train a rest and brought Moses into the living room with us while we finished a movie. He was one intent little fellow.

From intent to content.

Such fun staying up late with Mom and Dad! So that's what they do after I go to bed!

Big Gulp for a Little Gulp

It's not as bad as it looks! I had my hands full coming into the house one day and laid my drink (straw side facing out) at Moses' feet. When I returned I found this scene. I was suprised at his dexterity and grateful that he didn't figure out the finer points of using a straw to slurp my ginger ale.

There Was a Boy

A very strange, enchanted boy. They say he wandered very far, very far, over land and sea...

August Left-Overs

Finally! The last of the August photos!
(Yes, I am aware that it is October and that I am now behind on September, but let's focus on the positive here.)

This is me focusing on the positive.

Moses and Dad lounging in the park at a friend's birthday party on a beautiful Sunday evening. Happy birthday, Keith! Thanks again for letting us share in your celebration!

Moses has a ninja reach when it comes to our drinks. What a moocher! And even though I'm sure Dad would be proud if he was born with a taste for the brew, no coffee for the little one yet.

In this stellar action shot you are privy to the moment when Moses got wise to the fact that he doesn't actually disappear under that cloth and that he could pull it off his face to prove it.

"See Dad! I'm still here! Don't you feel me wiggling?"

"This is my busy face," Moses says. And boy, is this kid busy. Moving all the time.

He even moves when he sits up. This is what happens we we've been sitting up for too long. We just tip right over. We're getting there, though!

And now we're moving on the photos from the lovely month of September! Hallelujah, Glory Be!

Hee Hee.

The Moses Squeal

Over a decade ago the Macarena swept the nation. A new sensation is on the rise and coming your way. It's the Moses Squeal!
(enter a cool, driving rhythm...)
Alright, everybody, come on! Bite your lower lip, stick out your upper, and issue a guttural squeal of delight.
That's right!
You've got it.

The Moses squeal.

Oh yeah,
Lemme hear you say....(do da Moses Squeal)

Uh. Uh. Uh. Yeeeeeeeeah. The Moses Squeal.

Wait for it...

Say what?!

Squeal!

Rest in Peace...

So, we've started feeding our little boy peas. Richly coloured, bright green peas.

But all I can think of is:

Rest in Peace, Kermit the Frog!
